Trevor Ariza is a Dirty Dunker!

Kneeing_big_al We're watching the soon-to-be legendary "Shorts Shorts Game," and my buddy from 'Sota had a HUGE revelation:  Trevor Ariza is a Dirty Dunker. So, after TA nailed KG in the nuts about midway through the game, I did some looking for video evidence...

And it's true!  TA nails his knee right into his defender everytime!

Some links:

Evidence A - "Trevor Ariza HUGE dunk on Okafor" in which he knees Okes to the ground.

Evidence B - "Trevor Ariza facial jam on Grant Hill" in the Xmas game, in which he Bruce Lees GH.

Evidence C - "Trevor Ariza Dunks Over Ben Wallace"...in which he knees the Body.

Amazing. That Ariza kid is a keeper.

The Bulls Solution

Firing Skiles was not a bold move.  Pulling this trade off would be: Sam Cassell's balls to the floor, man with a plan, and the first step to building a championship team.

TEAM A receives:

Bwallace_2 Ben Wallace
Salary: $15,500,000
Years Remaining:  3

Bull's 1st Round Pick (top 5 protected)

BULLS receive: Expiring Contracts

Paxson doesn't need his first round pick.  He already has too many young players with too few minutes to go around as it is.  What he needs is to set himself up for free agency this summer or next (Kobe anyone?)  And just let Ben Gordon go walk himself to a team better suited for his 6th man capabilities.

Some possible trading partners:

  • Miami (JWill, Earl Barron, Zo, and Smush).  Because you know Riles is ready to pull the trigger to get them out of the cellar.  And they could use another pick in the draft. (Especially if the Heat somehow sneak into the playoffs and have to send their own pick to Minny.)Graph_sam_cassells_balls
  • Lakers (Kwame, Mihm, and Vujacic).  Lakers would upgrade at the center against the likes of Duncan and Amare.  Yes, they give up Vujacic, but Mitch is finally getting some cred for solid drafting capabilities, and this would give him another first-rounder to play with.
  • Bullay.  They don't have the contracts to trade, but could be a third team in a multi-swap.  "Antwan" has the hefty contract that could go to the likes ofBig_balls_lottery Miami, and the Wiz could set themselves up nicely for free agency.  Hold on there Wiz fans, do you really think the "sorta-Big 3" are the players to build around for a championship?  I'd rather keep Agent Zero and Caron and find a PF in free agency to round out the squad.

Of course, the big catch would be Paxson's having to admit the Wallace signing was a big mistake.  But GMs make mistakes, and fans forget.  If he convince Reinsdorf that he has a three year plan, fickle fans, let fans fickle.  Remember when Danny Ainge traded Brandon Roy to Portland for Bassy?  Sigh.

Letters from 'Sota: Paladino Live

Bassy
Just got this link from my buddy from Sota.

I'm mesmerized.  The tour-de-force that is Paladino Live from Paladino Joe.

The Isiah Thomas Exception.

Pistons Notes from an Isiah-pologist.

Bradford Doolittle over at Basketball Prospectus does a nice rundown of "Where GMs Come From?"  Now, I grew up in Detroit, and I have been loath to talk about Isiah's troubles in New York (i.e., I haven't.)  Isiah will always be Zeke to me, the Smiling Assassin.  He'll always be the man who built the Palace at Auburn Hills.  He always be hobblin around on a bum ankle in Game 6 scoring 25 pts in one quarter gainst the Lakers. He'll always be the greatest little man to ever lace them up.  And the greatest snubbee in balling history when he got ganked off the Dream Team roster.  If you're a buddy of mine you will no doubt have heard my diatribe (at least four times) on why it shouldn't be the Jordan/Magic/Bird era, but should be the Jordan/Magic/Bird/Isiah era (JIMB, pronounced "gym era").

Humor me here, I got a signed Zeke poster from a family friend for my bar mitzvah that still remains framed in my home and one of my prized prized possessions.What_foul

But he'll also be the guy who broke his own hand cold-cocking Laimbeer in practice.  And the guy who was run out of town by owner Bill Davidson, who basically said (but didn't say) that he would rather sell the team than allow Isiah to work in his front office.  That's what you call a divorce.  And it's one of those family secrets that us Detroiters don't like to talk about.  He's like the sad, drunk uncle who was the pride of the family when he was young, but is now just a family embarrassment.  That uncle does not get the family reunion invite.

And it's also where you get the "Isiah Thomas Exception" (ITE), a rule that Lig-addicts like myself should keep in mind when former players are hired as GMs.

The Isiah Thomas Exception: Do not hire a player in the front office whose former team wants nothing to do with him.

Thomasisiah01 Even before his CBA bankruptcy-ing or his troubles with the Raps and the Pacers, before his legal troubles at MSG, before his "missteps" with the Knicks roster-moves, Isiah's fallout with the Pistons should have been all the warning sign we needed.  If the team you basically MADE doesn't want you, something deeper went down.  And that "deeper" is not gonna go away with a change of setting.  It's a sad truth, and even as a diehard Isiah-pologist, it's a stark reality I can't ignore.

The ITE applies to Kevin McHale.  And it also applies to Elgin Baylor.  While neither of these guys had the ugly divorces with their former teams that Zeke did, the fact that they're not in the front offices of the teams that they made their names with is more than telling.

Dirk Nowitzki is an All-Star

Dirk_the_mvp_2 There has been much talk about the tragic downfall of the Big German.  Of his undeserved MVP.  Of his all-time upset in the playoffs last year.  Of his sojourns in the Outback where he "didn't pick up a basketball" (wink wink) and instead reannotated his dog-eared copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.  While this is all no doubt true, and I love the storyline as much as the next guy, we have officially come to the chapter of the story when Dirk becomes underrated.

It's all fun and games.  But let's stop beating on the guy.  His career slipped from its MVP heights, and he'll no doubt have a "comeback."  Do we have to bury him in the meantime?

Is he playing at MVP level?  No.

Is he playing at All-Star level?  Well, at 19-10, Dallas has the third best record in the Western Conference. (Yes, Tracy that's 8 wins more than your team, and Carmelo that's a game and a half lead in the standings on you, 3.5 up on Booz and two and a half games above your darling and mine- the Portanld Trail-Amazers.)

Dirk is a 7-time All-Star.  Are his stats significantly down from previous years?

Dirk_varejao_3

FG% 3P% TO REB AST PTS
01-02 .477 .397 1.9 10.0 2.4 23.4
02-03 .463 .379 1.9 9.9 3.0 25.1
03-04 .462 .341 1.8 8.7 2.7 21.8
04-05 .459 .399 2.3 9.7 3.1 26.1
05-06 .480 .406 1.9 9.0 2.8 26.6
06-07 .502 .416 2.1 8.9 3.4 24.6
07-08 .474 .301 2.3 8.3 4.0 21.8

What stands out?  His 3-point shooting is terribly down.  His rebounds are a bit low.  His assists are at a career high level.  He's definitely playing worse than his MVP season last year.  But he's having comparable statistics to his 3rd-Team All-NBA 2003-4 performance.

What's that Mr. Hollinger, his PER?

Here's the company he's in:Badass_dirk

Rank            PER

14   Caron 22.60
15   AJ 22.49
16   Tony 22.44

Ahead of Josh Howard (19th, 22.15); McGrady (24th, 21.49);  Marion (30th, 20.10); Carmelo (32nd, 19.68); RJ (33rd); "Antwan" (34th); PP (35th); Kaman (37th); David West (53rd); Marcus Camby (55th), Tyson Chandler (57th), Emeka (61st),  Artest (73rd);  AK47 (79th).

Breaking News

Down Goes Skiles!

Question: Was this Paxson's decision or did it come from higher up? I smell Reinsdorf.Reinsdorf

My two cents: Rick Carlisle is the best fit.  He's a system coach, relies on defense first and demonstrated with both the Pistons and Pacers that he can mold teams without superstars into competitive playoff-caliber squads.  Overshadowed by Larry Brown in Detroit and the Malice at the Palace in Indy, many forget that he has consistently coached up teams to 50 game winners.  Only hesitation is that he doesn't love to play young players.  Until put in a corner, down 3-1 to Orlando, did he play Tayshaun Prince in his rookie season. But he got more out of Jermaine O'Neal and Ron Artest than anyone had before or since.

Just make sure Chicago upper management watches their wives...

Highlights from the European Basketball Association

Euro_07For those of you who missed it, the top two teams from the European Basketball Association played last night.   Filled with high flying mayhem, diming wizardry, and touch-American-football defense, it promised to be a treat.  And it was, although unfortunately the game ended after 36 minutes.  Final score: Phoenecian Suns 122, Turin Raptors 103.  And, perhaps the surprise of the game, an American import Chris Bosh (pronounced B-O-SCH) proved he was the best player in the game, finishing with 42 pts and 13 boards.

The European Basketball Association made its first splash in the summer of 2004 when then General Manager, Bryan Colangelo, poached Canadian soccer star Steve Nash from the NBA.  But it was a year later, with the trade of American star Joe Johnson to the Atlanta Hawks for French after-thought Boris Diaw, that the Phoenicians began converting nay-sayers to their unorthodox brand of basketball.

Euroball Since its inception, American experts have been calling for the Euros to dismantle their league and join the NBA.  But, despite the uproar, the EBA has held firm to its roots, continuing to adopt a World War I era ethos: forget defense, if they can just keeping running as many young men against them as possible, they're going to be overwhelmed and have to surrender.  And, in fact, bucking the odds, the EBA has now grown with its first expansion franchise in Turin.  The Raptors--whose name quaintly alludes to an American film about dinosaurs run amok--poached the Phoenicians GM and the run-and-gun philosophy with it.

American pundits continue to doubt the viability of the EBA.  While the Euro upstarts may be successful against lesser competition, these pundits conclude that against the top tier American teams, the Phoenicians just can't sustain their offense-first game and win a championship.  These experts believe that if the Suns are determined to win it all, they have to trade some of their pieces for defensive stoppers who can clog the lane against the likes of Tim Duncan and, well, Tim Duncan.

But these naysayers are missing the key to the EBA.  Head coach Mike D'Antoni doesn't just want to win a championship, he wants to challenge the fundamental beliefs about the game.  As he told renowned American reporter Jack McCallum,Euro_betting

"'I've heard you don't lose the game in the first five minutes...but if you get down six in the first five minutes, then you lose by five, didn't you lose the game in the first five minutes?  I'm from West Virginia but I took a little math...Most coaches believe defenses are more vulnerable late in the shot clock, that you can get them out of position with a lot of passing.  I don't know why defenses wouldn't be more vulnerable before they get set.  That's why we play fast...People say that when you play fast you'll be a high-turnover team.  I think you'll be a low-turnover team because you don't throw as many passes."

McCallum calls these challenges to NBA truisms, "cutting up every chestnut." [Chestnuts grow in chestnut trees and "thrive on neutral and acidic soils."  They are "important food for jays, pigeons, and squirrels."  They are traditionally "roasted" in the American celebration of Christmas.  But in this context "chestnuts" seem to refer to deeply-rooted beliefs.]  To ask D'Antoni et al to compromise their style is equivalent to convincing Billy Beane that walks aren't as important as hits.  For D'Antoni is on a mission.  He doesn't believe in "playing the right way."  Or more accurately, he doesn't agree with the consensus defintion of what "playing the right way" is.  He doesn't need Larry Brown, he has his own LB, Leandro Barbosa.

The latest development in the EBA is the importation of a former role-player turned analyst, Steve Kerr [pronounced ST-EE-V-E K-U-R] to lead its player acquisition staff in the role of General Manager.  Only time will tell whether this former American champion will stay true to the founding philosophy of the EBA or adopt a more American style for his team.  True believers like D'Antoni are relying on Kerr's LebaneseImg_euroball roots [his father was the head of the American University of Beirut until he was assassinated in 1984] to inure him from American pressures.  As the trade deadline approaches, the EBA may face its first true test, whether Kerr will retain the European elan or compromise.   The clock is ticking as the first legendary star of the EBA, Steve Nash, seems to have only two years left in the tank.  Can Euro-ball win in America? If Kerr slows down the team and trades for the requisite American big man, we may never know.
